A Grade 3 learner died after part of a school wall at Lerutle Primary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, fell on learners during recess.

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, the wall collapsed during break on Thursday and six learners were seriously injured.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene and the injured learners were taken to various medical facilities for urgent treatment.

One of the injured learners, a grade 3 boy, later died of his injuries in hospital.

Matome Chiloane, Gauteng MEC for education, says he is shocked and saddened by the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the learner’s family, fellow learners, educators and the entire school community as they come to terms with this devastating loss.

“We will ensure that the necessary support is provided and that the circumstances that gave rise to this incident are established,” said Chiloane.

Support teams have meanwhile been deployed to offer counseling and emotional support to learners, educators and the family of the deceased.
