Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana denies that he called the legal representative of a witness in the Madlanga commission of inquiry during the commission’s hearing on Friday.

Adv. Kameel Premhid was making representations on Friday so that his client, businessman Suleiman Carrim, could testify in camera before the commission, when his phone rang.

Premhid indicated that it was “the finance minister” who was calling him, but that the call would have to wait. A video of this interruption has since been widely shared on social media.

But it was not Godongwana who called, the finance ministry now says.

“Contrary to these allegations, the minister did not make any phone calls as claimed. An official from the legal unit of the national treasury (did) call the lawyer on Friday about an unrelated matter.”

The ministry says Godongwana is currently on a working visit in London.

“The public and members of the media are requested to check information first through official government communication channels and not share unverified content.”
