A 19-year-old school pupil disappeared without a trace after telling her family she was attending extra classes at Jonga High School in Thembalethu, George, a week ago.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said the pupil, Amile Gibiseza, was reported missing by her sister after the teen failed to return home from school.

According to the police, the sister did not recall what clothing items Gibiseza had on when she left the house.

“Preliminary reports available suggest that she left her residence on Wednesday, 26 June and informed her family that she is attending extra classes at school.”

“She never returned home and was subsequently reported as missing,” said Pojie.

Asked for comment, the provincial Education Department spokesperson Millicent Merton said the Winter School programme at Jonga High School only started on Tuesday, 2 July 2024.

“The school was not informed about a missing learner. Our thoughts are with the learner’s family, and we hope for her safe return,” Merton said.

Police said anyone with information that will lead to pupil’s safe return can contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Frank Goliath at 079 894 1576 or Crime Stop at 086 001 0111.
