If Geordin Hill-Lewis (39) is elected as leader of the DA next month, he would like to stay on as mayor of Cape Town. “This is probably the best job in politics.”

And in South African politics, it is nothing strange to have two offices when your party starts to win, Hill-Lewis explains to Maroela Media after he put himself up for election as federal leader of the DA.

“The rule in politics is when your party starts winning and is successful, you always have to take on a political role and a government role. That’s just how it works.”

Hill-Lewis also believes it will be healthy for the DA if a mayor is elected as leader of the party, as he does not rely on pres. Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet does not serve as in the case of John Steenhuisen, the current leader of the DA and minister of agriculture.

“The president is not my boss. He can say what he wants and I can say exactly what I want.”

Hill-Lewis is currently the only candidate who has put his name in the hat for the influential position of DA leader.
