Fuel price cuts were implemented a day later than usual as the changes waited to be signed off by Minister Gwede Mantashe.

Robert Maake, director of fuel pricing in the Department of Mineral Resources and Petroleum, said petrol and diesel prices reductions were implemented on Thursday rather than the first Wednesday of the month, as is the norm, due to the timing of the swearing in ceremony of new Cabinet ministers.

“All the ministers, the new cabinet, were sworn in on Tuesday afternoon. So basically there was no minister to approve [the change] until the minister was sworn in. That’s why there was a delay of one day,” Maake said. “Ideally, it’s implemented on Wednesday, so this time it was implemented on Thursday.”
