When Franco Smith joined the Glasgow Warriors from his head of high performance position at the Italian Rugby Federation two years ago, he upended the structure by giving players whisky in the morning in one of his first days on the job.

As per his captain Kyle Steyn, the whisky was drunk out of polystyrene cups and didn’t make sense to the players.

However, two years later, and after being crowned United Rugby Championship winners after downing the Bulls 21-16 in a pulsating final at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, Smith and his players can finally savour a whisky properly.
