John Oliver’s talk show Last Week Tonight won an Emmy for best-scripted variety series on Sunday. During his speech, the comedian paid tribute to his dead dog and dropped the f-bomb while being played off.

In his speech, Oliver thanked his staff, executive producer Liz Stanton, writer and producer Tim Carvell, and HBO.

He fumbled his words while thanking his wife and children.

“I’d like to thank my wife, Kate, and our kid’s husband – husband. His name is Hudson; ouch,” Oliver said, realising his mistake and looking embarrassed.

“Ouch, that’s going to come back to haunt me,” Oliver said.

He also thanked his other son, Marzy. “I should’ve got his name wrong as well, just to even it out, but I didn’t.”

“I also want to thank – this is going to be very silly – our dog,” Oliver said.

“We had the most fantastic dog, and she was at our wedding, and she got us through the pandemic. She was with us for two pregnancies,” the comedian said.

The music used for telling recipients to wrap up their speeches started playing during his tribute.

“Perfect choice of music – We had to say goodbye to her,” he said, making the audience laugh and ‘aw’.

Oliver then playfully said, “Fuck you, there you go. I feel like Sarah McLachlan right now,” and then the music stopped.

Laughing with the audience, he composed himself and continued:

“She was an amazing dog… This isn’t just for her; this is for all dogs. All dogs, you are all very good girls; you are very good boys. You all deserve a treat. Play me off now.”

He concluded his speech with a “thank you” and walked off with his team as the crowd cheered.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has won 30 Emmys since debuting in 2014. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, previously hosted by Trevor Noah, was also honoured at the ceremony.
