An IT outage that downed FNB systems, including its app and website from 12:25 on Friday, was seemingly mostly resolved less than an hour later.

While the bank has not confirmed which services went down and what the issue was, customers took to social media to complain about not being able to access the FNB app and not being able to process payments.

There was a huge spike in outage reports for FNB on network outage reporting site Downdetector starting at 12:25 on Friday. By 13:25 on the same day, the volume of reports had fallen substantially.

While many companies make monthly salary payments on the 25th of the month, many people would have been paid on Friday as the 25th falls on a Sunday. Banks usually experience elevated levels of traffic on payday.

News24 sent questions to an FNB spokesperson who didn’t immediately respond.

FNB posted a statement on X at 14:05 acknowledging the issue.

“We are aware that there are issues being experienced across our channels. Our IT teams are working on restoring full functionality to the affected services. We apologise to our valued customers for the inconvenience caused,” the post said.

FNB confirmed that all services had been restored in a statement issued at 14:30.
