Five suspected rhino poachers were killed in a shootout with the police in Hluhluwe in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday evening.

Col. Robert Netshiunda, spokesperson for the police, says officers received information that the suspects were driving on the R618 in the direction of a game reserve.

“A stop-and-search operation was launched on the road. When the suspects arrived at the roadblock, a shootout broke out between the suspects and the police officers.”

Five suspects were shot dead. A hunting rifle, a silencer and two pistols were found in their possession.

“No police officer was injured in the shooting.”
