Five people died in a car accident near Marquard in the Free State on Friday night.

Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane said the accident happened on the R707 just before 22:00.

A BMW and a Kia collided head-on, resulting in the death of two men and three women.

“According to information, the black BMW was travelling on the R707 from Senekal in the direction of Marquard, and the white Kia was travelling from Marquard in the direction of Senekal when they collided head-on, approximately 4km from Marquard,” said Zwane.

“The cause of the crash will be subject to the ongoing investigation.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said they were investigating a case of culpable homicide.

He said the BMW had Lesotho registration number plates and directed anyone with reasonable suspicion that their next of kin may have been a victim of the accident to contact Marquard Police Station commander Warrant Officer Chaotsane on 082 466 8266.
