Five suspects linked to the armed robbery that took place on Sunday at the Gateway Theater of Shopping in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, were arrested by the police on Monday.
The suspects, between the ages of 20 and 44 years old, apparently raided a jewelery shop in this centre. The robbers looted jewels, then fired shots and fled.
An armed officer of a private company who was on the scene was wounded during the incident. The officer reportedly suffered multiple injuries and is receiving medical attention.
Lt. Col. Paul Magwaza, police spokesperson, says the suspects were arrested in the early hours of Monday morning after the police followed up on information that the suspects apparently wanted to sell the stolen items to someone in Umlazi.
The police also seized jewelery to the value of R3 million which was looted during the robbery, as well as clothes and bank cards.
The suspects are facing charges of robbery and attempted murder. They are expected to appear in the Magistrate’s Court in Durban on Tuesday.
The investigation continues.
