Stellenbosch University’s (SU) council has concluded that vice-chancellor Professor Wim de Villiers’ recommendation to close the controversial Wilgenhof men’s residence “warrants further consultation and consideration”.

In a communiqué to the SU community, the council said it had met on Monday to extensively debate De Villiers’ recommendation – which was unanimously supported by the rectorate – that the residence in its current form should be closed on the basis of the recommendation of a panel that investigated the contents of two rooms.

The council said De Villiers’ additional recommendation was that the hostel should be retained as an upgraded residence.
