Three of Karpowership SA’s proposed floating gas power plants were named preferred bidders in an emergency procurement round in 2021. (Karpowership)

The fate of Karpowership SA’s proposed floating gas power plants at three of South Africa’s ports should be known by the end of the month, according to director-general of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, Jacob Mbele.

Mbele was responding to questions from the media on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the Africa Energy Indaba, currently under way in Cape Town.

Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe had addressed the conference earlier, indicating that his ministry had issued more power procurement rounds than any other administration – between the years 2011 and 2018.
