Guilty and Proud by Marion Sparg. (Supplied)

Growing up in the Eastern Cape, Marion Sparg was unaware of politics until her Afrikaans teacher stopped his lesson to tell his all-white class about the Soweto protests. As a student, Sparg learned of Steve Biko’s murder, overhearing her classmates joking about him. While working as a journalist, she decided to take action.

In her memoir, Guilty and Proud, she recounts not only her experience in uMkhonto weSizwe – often as the only woman in the camp – and her friendship with Chris Hani but also her secret return, the bombs she planted (including one at John Vorster Square), and her arrest. She was given a 25-year sentence.

In this extract, Sparg writes about a weird journey she took with the security police after her arrest and interrogation.
