DAMAGE caused by heavy rains that cause floods has awakened the KwaDukuza municipality, which has launched a campaign to educate young people by equipping them with information about the situation. This municipality believes it is important to approach young people and see them as those who have the ability to take practical steps to protect homes and families when the weather changes unexpectedly.

The Speaker of this municipality, Mrs. Dolly Govender, says that it is being held hostage, and they are determined to visit different schools to teach young people about this situation. He said this while speaking where he had brought together different schools at Nkukwini Primary School to discuss the problem.

Govendeer, who was previously the Mayor of this municipality, said that with this plan, they hope to sow on fertile ground. Climate change has been seen to cause a lot of damage in different areas under this municipality.

He said it would be painful if they withhold information because that would mean that there is no future in this area because it will always be affected by climate change.

“There is very little for adults to be taught about the problem of climate change. But if we preach this gospel to our young people, that means that there can be a future where our children can live well without this problem,” he said.

He stated that the municipality will do everything possible to ensure that this program is a great success.

“We don’t even have the chance to think that there is a loophole in thinking if this is the case. But what is needed is to start now and equip our young people with information that can lead to the prevention of this problem,” he said.

He pointed out that the city had previously been hit by floods which left the infrastructure damaged which he said they do not wish to see happen again.

“Young people must be told that it is important to keep their city clean,” he explained.

One of the teachers present, Ms. Nokuthula Madonsela, who teaches at Nkukwini Primary, said that this program seems to be bearing good fruit.

“It is very gratifying if the municipality thinks it is good to teach children about the climate problem while they are still growing up. They must know now that if they throw garbage on the ground, that will have an impact,” he explained.
