Eleven suspects were arrested at a fuel plant in Meyerton in connection with the alleged theft of fuel.
The suspects, aged between 27 and 46, were caught on Sunday morning by members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (the Hawks) and other law enforcement partners.
Capt. Christopher Singo, spokesman for the Falcons, says members of the Falcons’ tactical operations unit (Toms) received information about an alleged robbery that would take place at a fuel plant in Meyerton.
“The information was followed up and the area was put under surveillance.”
Two tankers were spotted entering the premises.
“A preliminary investigation has found that the premises have been placed under administration. An investigation is also being carried out at this stage into allegations that the security personnel guarding the premises may have colluded with the nine suspects.”
The operation was carried out by the Toms, the Falcons’ non-ferrous metal crime unit, Vaal Rand’s Serious Organized Crime Unit, the Gauteng Traffic Police Air Wing, Bidvest Protea Coin and Protea Coin Air Wing.
Singo says the suspects will appear in court soon.
