Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said at around 17:30, “the victim was driving in Katlehong when he was shot at by suspects who were driving parallel to him.”

Photos of the scene, which News24 has seen, show at least a dozen rounds were fired at the driver’s side of the vehicle.

“The victim lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a palisade [fence]. He was certified dead on the scene. The motive for the killing cannot be confirmed at this stage,” said Masondo.

He added that police were “on the lookout for the suspects”, who remain at large.

“Police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in the apprehension of the suspects to please call the nearest police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said Masondo.

In an interview with Carte Blanche, Nkambule described his organisation as working alongside the police and local community policing forum but with a “more ruthless” approach.

“We don’t negotiate with criminals. We give them what they ask for,” he said during the interview.
