Khampepe Commission: 48 years later, family still awaits justice
Jaap van der Merwe was murdered in 1978, apparently by four members of uMkhonto weSizwe, the then military wing of the ANC. His body was never found and for his loved ones there was never complete closure either. His son testified before the Khampepe Commission this week. Read here.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) recommended in the late 1990s that certain people who were not granted amnesty in terms of the TRC process should be criminally prosecuted. Yet many of these cases did not progress for years and there were allegations of interference by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to delay or even stop prosecutions, possibly for political reasons.
An investigation into these allegations, led by Judge Sisi Khampepe, continues.

DA’s leadership battle begins
Geordin Hill-Lewis, the mayor of Cape Town, says he is ready to lead the DA. He made the announcement in Elsies River on Friday, shortly after nominations for DA leadership positions opened.
Solly Msimanga, in turn, threw his name into the hat as chairman of the DA’s federal council. Not for a title or prestige, says Msimanga, but for a goal. Read here.
Immigration system: Visas, permits ‘hawked to highest bidder’

An investigation by the Special Investigation Unit (SUE) at the Department of Home Affairs, showed that visas and residence permits were used as commodities, which ended up in people’s pockets with more than R181 million.
