Eastern Cape Health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth urged teenagers to abstain from sex or, if they are sexually active, use contraceptives to help prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted illnesses.
More than 145 teenagers nationally gave birth in public hospitals on Christmas Day, with the Eastern Cape recording 37 teens, between the ages of 15 and 19, becoming mothers.
Meth said girls as young as 10 were part of the 553 children under the age of 14 who fell pregnant and gave birth in the Eastern Cape during the 2022/2023 financial year.
