While Cabinet ministers do not like getting their hands dirty, Dr Mimmy Gondwe volunteers to scrub the toilets at her church in Cape Town whenever she goes to pray.

The recently appointed deputy higher education minister said: “I always insist on cleaning the toilets. I literally scrub the toilets and everything, and I even help to clean the potties used by the little children. I have always explained to anyone who asked me that it humbles and grounds me.”

She also refuses to sit in the front rows in church but sits at the back “because I don’t want it to be about me”.
