The directorate of the Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) has ordered Discovery to withdraw a “misleading” advert offering maternity benefits on gap cover.

The advertising regulator labelled the Discovery gap cover ad “misleading” as it did not more specifically clarify that there was a 12-month waiting period before the claimed maternity benefits kicked in, according to an ARB ruling dated 25 June.

The advert, which was originally placed on Instagram to advertise Discovery gap cover, displayed a young couple showing excitement at the results of a pregnancy test alongside a caption that read: “Free for 3 Months. Are you thinking of growing your family?”
