Being a bridesmaid/maid-of-honour can be quite taxing – especially when the bride has a ton of expectations. (Jacoblund/Getty Images)

“My sister is getting married, and I couldn’t be happier for her. While the news initially brought excitement – mainly because she tasked me with the special duty of being her maid of honour – I now feel like backing out due to her expectations.

“Not only am I in charge of organising and footing the bill for her bridal shower (something I don’t wholly mind), but she also expects me to spend around R1500 on the dress and shoes she wants me to wear.

“Initially, I accepted this, but after hearing that she also wanted me to contribute financially to the overall wedding, I started to feel pressured, and the situation didn’t get better after I tried telling her she was expecting a little too much and she accused me of not caring,” shares 29-year-old Lia.
