Disaster management teams are on high alert after warnings
of a cold front in southern KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, bringing strong
southerly to south-westerly winds.
The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional
Affairs (Cogta) said the warning had been issued by the South African Weather
Service.
“The South African Weather Service has issued a warning
that wind gusts of up to 70-80km/h are being experienced between Port Edward
and Richards Bay, and are expected to extend further between Port Edward and
Kosi Bay,” KwaZulu-Natal Cogta spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said.
Strong winds could lead to disruption of beachfront
activities, as well as potential damage to homes and temporary structures.
Mzila said this could also result in small boats taking on
water or capsizing, as well as causing temporary issues at small harbours and
ports.
“We strongly advise residents to secure their homes and
belongings. Small boat owners should avoid going out to sea, and beachgoers are
urged to stay away from the water during these periods,” he added.
Mzila said the province’s disaster management teams had been
placed on high alert and would continue monitoring the situation closely.
