In its
first sitting, South Africa’s seventh Parliament broke away from the
parliamentary politics blueprint of the past decade.
New DA MPs’
first act was to vote for the ANC, the ANC supported a DA candidate and the IFP
seconded the nomination of an ANC president.
This meant
that President Cyril Ramaphosa was re-elected for a second term as president,
the ANC’s Thoko Didiza was elected as the speaker, and the DA’s Annelie Lotriet
was elected as her deputy.
