Barely an hour before Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi was scheduled to reveal his cabinet on Sunday, the announcement was abruptly called off.

It revealed the fragile state of the government of national unity (GNU) since, according to a well-placed source, the formation of the Gauteng executive hinges largely on the ANC’s talks with the DA at a national level.

The source said the DA accused the ANC of not consulting it on a number of “fundamental” issues, including which portfolios would be allocated to the party in Gauteng.
