Nearly 15 days until South Africans vote, coalition governments in at least two provinces are almost inevitable; however, analysts have warned that political parties may not be ready.
While the idea of a Government of National Unity (GNU) is being bandied about, panelists at a Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) dialogue on the viability of coalitions in South Africa also said the mood, the environment or circumstances compared with that of 1994 means chances of a GNU are slim as “South Africans are no longer politically innocent”.
