The days when an apple was just another fruit in a basket are quickly coming to an end.

The Flash Gala apple brand is currently taking the world by storm, and according to the latest figures it is much more than just a fruit revolution – it is a digital success story that puts South African agriculture on the world map.

According to Tru-Cape, their marketing campaign recently reached a huge milestone by reaching more than 113.8 million people worldwide in 2025.

For this campaign, this is a massive leap from the 73.8 million people reached in 2024. From the shelves in South Africa to the markets of China, India, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia – everyone is talking about South Africa’s apples, thanks to the Flash Gala apple brand.

According to Conrad Fick, marketing director at Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, the secret of this success lies in a first digital approach. Instead of relying solely on traditional advertising, the team leveraged social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to put the brand directly into consumers’ hands.

“Through partnerships with global internet personalities (influencers) and new commercial material, we were able to establish the brand as a sought-after, premium product,” explains Fick.

The idea is simple: a consumer sees the apple on their social media, and the next time they come into the store, they recognize the brand on the shelf.

The difference between an ordinary apple and a Flash Gala lies in the shift from the generic variety to a recognizable brand. It’s about the experience, the quality and the status of the product, says Fick.

Anthony Rawbone-Viljoen, director of Pink Vein who is the owner of Big Bucks Gala, says the momentum will only accelerate.

Due to the good sales and the financial contribution of the brand, the budget for advertising and promotions is increased to position Flash Gala as the top choice in the apple category.

The team is already looking forward to the rest of 2026 with great anticipation. The focus will be to further strengthen Flash Gala’s competitiveness. With a growing international footprint and consumers looking more and more for quality, it looks like South Africa’s apples will be the brightest star in the fruit basket for a long time to come.
