The Bakenkop Primary School in Centurion was plunged into mourning after the sudden death on Monday morning of Elaine Kuschke, a teacher at the school.

Although the exact cause of her death is not known, the school confirmed that Kuschke died of natural causes.

According to a statement, emergency personnel were called to Kuschke’s classroom early in the morning where she collapsed. Despite medical intervention, she could not be revived.

“We are devastated by this loss,” says Willie Fourie, head of the school.

“Miss Kuschke was a beacon of stability and love for the children entrusted to her. Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to her next of kin. We ask the community to keep them and our school in their prayers during this time of mourning.”

The school shared the news of Kuschke’s death on social media. Fourie told Maroela Media that Kuschke worked as a teaching student at the school and completed her teaching degree last year. At the beginning of the year, she is officially as a gr. 5 teacher appointed.

“Elaine was an integral part of our school family. She will be remembered for her selfless service, her passion for education and the compassionate way in which she treated each learner. Her passing leaves a huge void in our corridors and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her,” reads the school’s statement.

“The school’s first priority at the moment is to ensure the emotional well-being of our learners and staff affected by this incident. Psychologists and counselors are engaged in trauma counseling. This support will continue in the coming days.”

Details about a memorial service for Kuschke will be announced as soon as it is finalized.
