INGCABA is in the public to comment on the law that will allow the people of this country to keep their IDs on their mobile phones. Under the law theIdentification Act ka-1997, they will also be able to keep birth certificates, marriage certificates and other important information from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The amendments to this law were announced by the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, who urged the public to comment before June this year.

“With these amendments, we want to bring modern technology to things that affect IDs in this country. The existing IDs, smart IDs, will continue to work with those of technology. In that way, we want it to be easy for people to store their information as well as other important information on mobile phones. They will not only store IDs, but they will also be able to store birth and marriage certificates,” said Schreiber.

He said they want to make changes in the department by strengthening technology.

“We want to protect people’s information by ending the rampant corruption in the department, fighting the problem of people in the country illegally, the theft of people’s information as well as strengthening our programs. We want people to be able to get what they need while staying at home,” he said.

He said they also want to improve the way people’s information is collected in the department. He stated that they will strengthen security so that people’s information does not reach the wrong people.

“We are working with different departments, including the president’s office, to strengthen technology in the government. We want people to get all the information easily on mobile phones.”

The public is given until June 6, 2026 to comment on the amendments.

They can direct their comments to:Chief Director: Legal Services and they can send their comments directly to the department at the address: 10th Floor, Hallmark Building, 230 Johannes Ramokhoase Street, Pretoria, 0001. They can send by post to: Private Bag X114, Pretoria, 0001. They can also send by email to:(email protected).
