It may be difficult to admit it with the rawness of the emotion right now, but it had to be this way.

If South Africa were going to break an ICC (International Cricket Council) World Cup curse to rival that of the Boston Red Sox and has overshadowed Ireland rugby’s quarter-final struggles, David Moyes’ winless record against the Premier League’s top six and having Drake place a large bet on you winning a sporting event, they were always going to have to go through the wringer to do it.

And when this T20 World Cup final began with India winning the toss and electing to bat, there was something fitting about a team which has suffered so much at the hands of chasing what has become its own version of the promised land having to chase to achieve South African cricket immortality.
