“Charley Hull,” is Ellandri van Heerden’s immediate answer when she is asked about her favorite golfer.

Just like the England star, the 18-year-old from Bloemfontein also provides a kaleidoscope of colour, cheerfulness and talent when she takes to the tee.

“I like to play in bright, colorful clothing because I believe that one’s personality shines through on the court, as it were.”

“Because,” is her tongue-in-cheek explanation, “even on the days when your game is less good, your outfits surely don’t have to follow a similar path!”

Not that there have necessarily been many cloudy days in this rising star’s golf career. She plays in the Sunshine Series for women and she won her junior Protea colors in 2024; an achievement she still looks back on with pride.

“I represented my country in Jakarta (Indonesia) and it was an incredible honor to receive the green jacket.”

She started writing the first chapter of her golf story as a seven or eight-year-old (“I can’t quite remember when”) when her father (Bertus) invited her to play with him.

Her natural ingenuity to touch the ball and hit it far impressed friend and foe and she received lessons from the second year of grade.

Van Heerden was a learner at the Rosestad’s well-known Eunice Primary, but her increasing golf duties meant that she spent more time on the green than behind the school desks and home education was later her forte.

She can hit the ball between 220 m and 260 m; depending on factors such as air pressure or altitude. However, she reckons that her short game is her greatest strength.

“I’ve always liked to swing my driver, but it’s actually your short game that saves you on the course. My long distance putts are my pride in particular – I don’t just need three putts.”

Just by the way, she has been adept behind the wheel of a golf cart from a very young age.

“I remember I really wanted to have a license too and then as an eight-year-old I just made myself a golf cart license!”

Van Heerden also admires Hull for her perseverance and willingness to work hard – important qualities to ensure success in the sporting world. In addition, a clear goal is also of great importance.

“I was persuaded to be a part of the LPGA. After all, it’s the biggest tour you can play in.”
