Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.
Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has proposed that South Africa’s 26 universities increase tuition and residence fees by 4.5% and 6.5% respectively.
He informed the chairpersons of council in a letter dated 28 December that a three-year fee agreement could only be introduced between 2025 and 2027.
This move is likely to affect students from the so-called “missing middle”, defined as those whose annual household income is between R350 000 and R600 000, which includes many children of police officers, teachers and nurses.
