While SA’s worst outbreak of bird flu to date appears mostly under control, the epidemic cannot yet be declared officially over, provincial government experts told a roundtable discussion of key poultry stakeholders on Wednesday.
The epidemic saw a proliferation of a new variant H7 avian influenza, mainly in Gauteng. There are still 10 open cases on quarantined farms in the Gauteng area, stakeholders were told.
These 10 cases relate to producers who are seeking exemptions from the government’s directive to cull flocks in the wake of an outbreak that has seen about 9.5 million chickens either die or be slaughtered as a mitigating exercise.
