Johannesburg experienced a magnitude 3 earthquake on Saturday night.

Earthquake Track, a website that monitors seismic activity worldwide, recorded the quake at 20:25.

The site could not determine the depth of the activity, but residents reported feeling two tremors in Midrand, Roodepoort, Weltevreden Park, Auckland Park, Kensington, Turffontein, and Soweto.

After the event, Johannesburg residents took to social media to record their experiences.

@Murdoch_123 posted on X: “That was not light. When the house and windows shake violently, it is not light.”

“Big tremor and aftershock a little bit after. Johannesburg South. Felt like a bomb went off close to the house,” @NazliHamilton posted.

@Thalita_vdMerwe posted: “100% that was a tremor just now 20:28 Weltevreden Park.”

@Jonesboas said: “Yooh, I felt it. I jumped out of bed (sic).”

Apmatsepane posted:

I thought my neighbours in Protea Glen were celebrating a birthday party after I heard a little sound(s). I just relaxed watching cricket.

According to the Richter Scale, an earthquake of magnitude 3 is one that is felt and can cause shaking of indoor objects, but rarely causes damage.

There are over 100 000 magnitude 3 earthquakes around the world each year.
