Ronwen Williams looked awkward at first as two members of the South African Police Service waddled onto the stage carrying the country’s flag in a drill so unsynchronised that following their hand movement made you dizzy.
The Bafana Bafana captain somehow managed to rescue the fiasco and turned it into the dignified and emotional moment it should have been had the police played their part.
Williams took the flag and the responsibility of protecting it with his chest out and, with the flag in his hands, he suddenly towered over the two clumsy law enforcement agents.
