The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal is busy investigating the employment of teachers or officials from other countries following the shocking results of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).

According to IOL, the SIU report revealed that there are foreigners who are being given fake legal authorization in South Africa, raising concerns about the integrity of the process used to check the documents of immigrants who are employed as workers in the education sector.

The KZN Education Commissioner, Mr. Sipho Hlomuka, said that they are analyzing the SIU report which found that some foreigners are legally authorized in South Africa.

Hlomuka said that the department is currently discussing whether this program affects it; in particular, the need to determine if any of their employees are involved. He announced his intention to discuss with the top management for a comprehensive examination of all foreigners employed in his department.

“So that we can investigate whether those teachers or any official within the department have been hired properly, and are here in the province properly.”

He said they did it because appropriate measures must be taken to check people who are employed based on forged legal documents, even if those documents were considered legitimate at the time of employment.
