A Grade 3 student at a primary school in Gauteng has died after a wall fell on him during recess on Thursday.

The Department of Education in Gauteng said the wall of the Lerutle Primary School in Daveyton, Kurhuleni, fell on six students, who were seriously injured.

“The paramedics rushed to the scene, and all six students were taken to different health centers for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, one of the injured students, a Grade 3 boy, died while being treated at the hospital,” the department said in a statement.

The Education Commissioner in Gauteng, Matome Chiloane, has called for an investigation.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and the loss of such a young life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family, fellow students, teachers, and the entire school community as they mourn this tragic incident. We will ensure that we get the necessary help and that the conditions associated with this incident are eliminated,” said Chiloane.

The MEC said that psychological support teams have been deployed at the school to counsel students, staff and parents
