One person was injured after a car ended up in the Swartkops River outside Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape over the weekend.

The person was thrown from the car when the vehicle left the bridge on the N2 on Saturday and ended up in the water.

Rescue workers from the organization Coastal Water Rescue (CWR) were called just before 09:00 on Saturday after the accident occurred.

“Upon our arrival at the scene we received information that there was a single victim who had been ejected from the vehicle. CWR swimmers were sent into the water to ensure that the vehicle was empty.”

According to CWR, which was on the scene throughout, the area next to the bridge was very steep.

The organization says in a statement that paramedics from the Gardmed ambulance service assisted the victim while a rope and pulley system was set up with which the victim could be lifted on a stretcher from EMS emergency services to safety.

“After the victim was stabilized for transport by the Gardmed Ambulance Service, the CWR team assisted in carrying the (stretcher) to the nearest point where the ropes were ready.

“The EMS rescue team then slowly pulled the stretcher up the hill where Gardmed continued with medical care.”

The car was later pulled from the river with the help of a towing service. CWR also had a hand there.

“CWR team members again went to help ensure the safety of the staff of Precision Towing in the water while the vehicle was hooked to be pulled out of the river,” says the organization in its statement.
