The ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) is urgently meeting in Cape Town on Wednesday evening about the Phala Phala saga, but pres. Cyril Ramaphosa will not be part of the conversation.

According to Fikile Mbalula, the secretary general of the ANC, the party’s top seven leadership will present matters to the NEC for discussion and analysis.

“We will process the (Phala Phala) judgment and then formulate the ANC’s position,” Mbalula said during a media conference on Wednesday.

He explained that the decision not to include Ramaphosa in the meeting was taken deliberately.

“When a matter is discussed that affects an individual, that person must withdraw himself. We want NEC members to be able to participate freely in a discussion, debate and reflect on the issues without any psychological or other hindrance,” he said.

The Phala Phala issue has once again put pressure on Ramaphosa after the Constitutional Court found last Friday that the National Assembly acted unlawfully when MPs voted against the acceptance of an independent panel report.

The report found that there is evidence that Ramaphosa may have to answer questions about the Phala Phala saga.

Ramaphosa announced on Monday that he would take the independent panel report on review.

However, he insisted earlier this week that the ruling of the Constitutional Court does not require him to resign from office.

This evening a special sitting of the #ANCNEC is underway to deliberate on the Constitutional Court judgement of 8 May. Following discussions by ANC Officials on Monday, a report will be presented to the NEC for consideration and engagement.#ANCAtWork pic.twitter.com/2rsRAjg5Fa
