The opposition groups are pointing the ax at President Cyril Ramaphosa, following the decision of the Constitutional Court which raised the issue of the theft of US dollars from his Phala Phala farm.
Two groups have submitted a motion of no confidence in Ramaphosa’s leadership, while a third group wants to immediately establish a committee to carry out the process of removing Ramaphosa from office.
MKP, EFF and ATM groups have written to the Speaker, Mrs Thoko Didiza. Although the demands of these groups are different, they all want Ramaphosa to be axed.
MKP and ATM want the motion of no confidence in Ramaphosa’s leadership to be heard immediately.
The EFF, on the other hand, wants a committee to be established immediately to carry out the process of removing Ramaphosa from office. This plan proposed by the EFF is different from the motion of no confidence in the leadership.
The leader who is released under this program does not receive his benefits including pension as happened to the former judge in the Western Cape, Dr. John Hlophe, and the former public defender, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane.
The plan proposed by the EFF takes time as there are hearings for presentations where the person who is removed from office is given the opportunity to answer.
If there is a motion of no confidence in the president, there is a debate in the Parliament, and then there is a vote.
What could further delay the plan proposed by the EFF is for Ramaphosa to challenge the report of the Parliamentary team led by retired judge, Sandile Ngcobo, who found that Ramaphosa may have to answer for allegations that the police were not informed about the theft of money from his farm.
Ramaphosa once tried to challenge the report but he stopped because Parliament rejected it.
Since Friday’s decision has sent the report back to Parliament, Ramaphosa may return to court.
The EFF Chairperson who is the party’s Whip in Parliament, Mrs. Nontando Noluntshungu, has written to Mrs. Didiza asking for a committee to be established immediately.
Mrs. Noluntshungu said that the court’s decision has put an end to the ongoing dispute over this matter.
He set a deadline of two days for Mrs. Didiza to confirm the establishment of the committee.
“If we don’t get an answer to this, then you know that we have the right to take legal action against you. This issue has been delayed for a long time. We don’t want it to be delayed again.”
MKP leader in Parliament, Hlophe, said they no longer trust Ramaphosa’s leadership.
Hlophe said they want the motion of no confidence in Ramaphosa’s leadership to be heard before Wednesday.
Hlophe and the ATM leader, Mr. Vuyo Zungula, said they wanted a secret vote on the motion of no confidence in Ramaphosa’s leadership.
The leadership of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal expressed their support for Ramaphosa.
The coordinator of the ANC KwaZulu-Natal leadership team, Mr. Mike Mabuyakhulu, said the court’s decision does not mean that Ramaphosa is guilty.
Parties partnering with the ANC in the coalition government, including the DA and the IFP. they did not want to say whether they would oppose Ramaphosa’s removal from office.
These groups are of the opinion that the law should be followed.
