Two senior police officers and a civilian were arrested in connection with the alleged illegal trade and illegal possession of precious metals.

Brig. Athlenda Mathe, police spokesperson, says the three suspects were arrested after an intensive investigation by the Gauteng unit for counterintelligence operations.

According to Mathe, the arrests are related to an investigation into allegations of illegal precious metal transactions, corruption and related offences.

The suspects were arrested over the weekend after the team executed a J50 warrant for their arrest.

“These arrests are part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement authorities to dismantle criminal networks involved in the illegal trade in precious metals and corruption.”

The suspects are expected to appear in Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on Monday. They may face charges of illegal trade in precious metals, obstruction of justice, corruption and breach of applicable legislation regulating precious metals in South Africa.
