Two young rhinos were brought to safety in the Kruger National Park on Saturday, after alert visitors noticed distress.

Visitors spotted the two calves, aged between 12 and 18 months, on the road to the Malelane section of the game park and called park authorities. The calves were immediately caught and taken to a place of safety.

A helicopter was used to transport the younger calf with a sling, while the older calf was taken to a safe place in a crate.

“We express our great gratitude to the visitors whose quick action to call the authorities made this rescue effort possible. Their commitment to conservation gave these vulnerable calves a second chance at survival,” says JP Louw, spokesperson for SANParks.

After the rescue attempt, game wardens began combing the area to locate the cow.

“The circumstances surrounding her absence are still unclear and the investigation continues,” said Nel.

“The Kruger National Park remains committed to protecting its wildlife and thanks the public for their continued support in protecting this iconic species.”
