When the second-half cavalry rolled in on the 50th-minute mark, there was a muffled cheer from the Loftus Versfeld crowd.
They knew the value of a fresh group of six forwards to see out the second half, but also, being knowledgeable, understood the change would require the group to get to grips with the game, its pace and its nuances before finding their stride in the last 10 minutes.
