Around 25 people were injured after a train derailed at Dal Josafat Station near Paarl on Tuesday night, Metrorail Western Cape confirmed.
According to Drakenstein Farm Watch (DFW), a private fire fighting service, the derailment was reported just after 18:30.
DFW said it rushed to the scene and found several people were injured while many more remained trapped.
“The train was en route from Cape Town to Wellington station when the incident occurred. Emergency services, including ambulances, firefighters and the South African Police Service (SAPS) were on site to assist the injured passengers,” Metrorail said in a statement.
“It is reported that twenty-five passengers were injured and taken by ambulance to various hospitals in the area for further medical attention. No fatalities were reported.”
The other passengers onboard were transported to their homes.
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) and Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) are investigating the incident.
Prasa has also reported the incident to the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR), in line with existing protocols, Metrorail said.
