The National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) anti-corruption unit has arrested 12 senior police officers in connection with the awarding of a healthcare contract of R360 million to alleged crime boss Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala’s company, Medicare 24.
Maroela Media reported in January that Dean Macpherson, the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, terminated the lease with Medicare 24 Tshwane with immediate effect after serious allegations about its allocation emerged.
Macpherson said at that stage that Medicare 24 Tshwane was linked to Matlala and that the company had obtained the lease for a hospital facility in Pretoria West amid allegations that standard procurement processes had been bypassed.
The allegations were raised, among other things, in a parliamentary ad hoc committee, and were also confirmed by an investigation by a South African media company.
The contract was awarded in 2024 and provided for, among other things, wellness screening tests, medical retirement assessments and temporary disability leave.
Some of the allegations made before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, as well as before Parliament’s ad hoc committee on alleged police corruption, included that Matlala allegedly convinced police officers with money and gifts to pave the way for the award of the tender to his company.
Kaizer Kganyago, national spokesperson for the NPA, says the 12 “senior police officers and a director of a company” are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court this week on charges of corruption, fraud and breaches of the Public Financial Control Act.
